E-Business and e-Government have evolved considerably in the last 10 years and it is has now become firmly established as an emerging field of inquiry with a growing number of researchers.  This raises serious conceptual and practical issues with regard to its relationships with Information Systems, especially in terms of their focus, boundary, target audience, as well as key research questions. There are many mutually beneficial opportunities for collaborations in research and publications and in influencing public perceptions.

This special issue follows the e-Business & e-Government Special Interest Group of the British Academy of Management (BAM) that took place at Brunel University Business School on the 3rd-4th May 2007.  Over 40 participants from all over the UK participated in the event to present, discuss and debate issues concerning the Relationship between e-Business and Information Systems research. The presentations and debates at the workshop highlighted some of the key issues, explored common interests and identified a number of ways forward.  In particular, new opportunities for collaboration between e-Business and e-Government researchers and IS specialists have been identified, as well as the need for stronger links between the e-Business and e-Government SIG with various IS communities. Further details about the workshop are available at http://www.ebusiness-newcastle.com/news/events/07_05_ebusiness.php.

Academics and practitioners are invited to submit conceptually and empirically based original papers addressing issues linked to the central theme. For the manuscripts guidelines please visit the journal’s web site at: http://www.business-and-management.org. All papers should be submitted via email attachment (in MS Word format) to the Guest Editor, Professor Feng Li (Feng.li@ncl.ac.uk) before 25th June 2007.  All papers will be double blind refereed.

The special issue is scheduled for publication before the end of 2007.

e-Business & e-Government British Academy of Management Special Interest Group (SIG) Workshop

E-BUSINESS AND INFORMATION SYSTEMS RESEARCH: WHERE ARE WE GOING?

3rd-4th May 2007 - Brunel University

Organizers: Dr Michael Bourlakis (Brunel University), Dr Savvas Papagiannidis (Newcastle University), Professor Feng Li (Newcastle University)

The e-Business & e-Government SIG would like to invite academics and practitioners to participate in an interactive workshop at Brunel University to explore the future directions of e-Business and Information Systems research.  The main purposes are to (1). Investigate the relationships between e-Business and Information Systems as rapidly evolving fields of research. (2). Discuss and debate key issues of common interest between participants; and (3). Facilitate collaborations in research and publications.  In the past three years, this SIG has successfully edited four journal special issues and one book, in conjunction with the e-Business & e-Government Track at BAM annual conferences. We are currently negotiating with a number of journal editors and book publishers for a journal special issue and/or an edited book. This workshop will provide a useful forum for you to test your ideas and shape the focus of the journal special issue as well as the agenda of the SIG in general.

The Workshop

The workshop will be organised as a series of presentations by participants; combined with themed discussions around a range of issues. Possible topics include (but not exclusively):

•   What are the relationships between e-Business and Information Systems?  Where do we draw the line?
•   What are the most significant developments in technology, infrastructure, services and applications that will affect our research?  What are the main opportunities and challenges in the next five years.
•   Reviews on how e-Business and Information Systems have evolved from their inception to where we are today.
•   How might we study them? Are existing research methodologies and methods still appropriate, or do we need to develop new methodologies/methods?
•   What theoretical frameworks, techniques and skills do we need to address emerging issues?

The conference will be organized by National University of Singapore (NUS) Enterprise. Organized for the first time in Asia, Triple Helix VI 2007 will provide a global forum for academic scholars from different disciplinary perspectives as well as policy makers, university administrators and private sector leaders from different countries to exchange and share new learning about the diverse emerging models of the entrepreneurial university, the changing dynamics of University- Industry-Government interactions around the world and the complex roles of the university in local, regional and national economic development.

We invite scholarly paper contributions that seek to advance over understanding of the dynamics of University-Industry-Government interactions in general and the emerging entrepreneurial university models in particular. We also welcome practitioner-oriented contributions that provide insights on new policy innovations and share knowledge on practices, as well as proposals for workshops and poster presentations that contribute to promoting exchange and dialogues on how universities in the 21st century can better cope with the challenges of globalizations while serving local and regional goals.

Special Issue : e-RETAILING and e-SHOPPING

As e-retail grows quickly beyond a tenth of all retail in the US and some European countries, this topic represents key challenges and changes currently facing almost all of those UK marketers who are actively targeting the consumer end of the distribution chain. Although much has been published in the Retail and IT literature, recent work has yet to be drawn together in the Marketing discipline. Therefore, our goal for this special issue of the European Journal of Marketing is to disseminate a coherent body of research that will provide insights into how the e-retail sector is responding (or should respond) to the challenges. Empirical and conceptual and studies are welcomed but all contributions should address the practical implications of the research.

Millions of users from around the globe participate in massive multiplayer online role playing games (MMORPG), such as Second Life and World of Warcraft, 3D worlds that are often considered the next generation Web. With their user base growing at an exponential rate we are already experiencing the development of a phenomenon that may be as significant as the Web itself. The rapid development of MMORPGs and metaverses is likely to bring about significant business as well as social, legal, policy, methodological and technological opportunities and challenges.

This special issue aims to explore these and contribute to this rapidly expanding field by focusing on issues relevant to electronic business and management. Academics and practitioners are invited to submit conceptually and empirically based original papers addressing areas such as those listed below:

  • Business opportunities and challenges
  • Marketing implications
  • Identity management issues
  • Virtual economies and economic policies
  • Virtual entrepreneurship and metaverse ebusiness models
  • Developing MMORPGs and related strategies and ebusiness models
  • Real money trading
  • Consumer and business ethics in metaverses
  • Case studies (e.g. Second Life, World of Warcraft etc)
  • Human-computer interaction issues in metaverses
  • Psychological aspects of participating in metaverses
  • Legal issues (e.g. copyright and ownership of virtual property)

The above areas are just indicative and this special issue would welcome papers discussing other relevant topics. For the manuscripts guidelines please visit the journal’s web site. All papers, accompanied by a short biographical note for each author (approximately 200-250 words per author), should be submitted as an email attachment to the Guest Editors (Email: savvas.papagiannidis@ncl.ac.uk).
